The Role

The Chief Communications Officer is a critical leadership role at Bloomberg LP. The individual in this position will have overall responsibility for shaping the company¿s communication, community, and public image strategies. He/she will be responsible for ensuring the integration and consistency of all communications, and for enhancing the company's brand with key internal and external constituencies worldwide. A high degree of collaboration with the entire Bloomberg LP senior management team is required.
The Chief Communications Officer will be a visible leader interfacing directly with the senior management team, serving as a business partner on myriad issues related to the corporate brand and image for internal and external constituencies. S/he needs to have a solid understanding of the global financial markets and be innately familiar with the industry areas with which the company does business.
The individual in this role will constantly challenge and improve the effectiveness of Bloomberg LP's strategic communications functions and activities, and lead a "best-in-class" team, where talent is developed and leveraged effectively, and team members demonstrate superior skills and collaborative behaviors.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Communications Planning and Corporate Positioning: Develop an ongoing strategic communications plan to continue to promote and position Bloomberg LP as the leader in its industry. Must develop a clear understanding of the goals of the company and its units and businesses. It is critical that strong relationships be fostered with the business managers and their communications needs met and exceeded.
  • Corporate Identity/Brand Management: Ensure consistency of brand positioning by managing messages across all mediums and by closely integrating all related activities. These programs should focus on supporting key business objectives, as well as overall strategic identity objectives. Provide counsel to senior management to enhance the brand and reputation, and align public relations with marketing strategies to maximize effectiveness of communications activities in a one platform message.
  • Business Unit Communications: Ensure that the needs of Bloomberg LP¿s business units are being met and expectations exceeded. Create and foster solid working relationships that support communications strategy.
  • Media Relations: Assume broad-reaching, strategic responsibility for the management of a global media relations program that will protect Bloomberg LP's image, and support specific messages designed to reinforce their position as the leader in its category. Develop media relations objectives, key messages and competitive story angles. Develop, cultivate and maintain relationships with the media. Advise senior management team and executives about how to manage the media to leverage the brand and image, and minimize risk. Keep current with the shifting media landscape and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Crisis Communications: Provide leadership and strategic oversight of the planning and development of a comprehensive issues management program that ensures an effective response to unforeseen problems that may occur at all levels.
  • Executive Communications: Partner with the Chairman, President and other members of senior management to advise and coordinate priority-level activities including: speaking engagements, events, affiliations, community activities, internal communications, public affairs, etc. Advise executives about how to best leverage their time and interests. Work with the communications team to create and develop presentations, speeches, talking points, and collateral materials that are designed to persuade, inspire, educate, and inform.
  • Manage global staff as well as outside resources (public relations agencies, etc.) and budget.

Qualifications:

  • The Chief Communications Officer must be an outstanding personal communicator with the stature and presence to represent Bloomberg LP.
  • This individual will be a business executive and a world-class communications professional, as well as a motivator and leader. S/he must have outstanding planning skills, a solid understanding of business relationships, and the knowledge, intellect and temperament to work at the highest levels in a corporate environment. A high degree of personal initiative, as well as outstanding interpersonal, team, listening, verbal, written communications and process facilitation skills are absolutes. Exhibit strong counseling and strategic skills with the ability to work in an evolving environment and balance the needs of various internal and external stakeholders; high tolerance for rapid change and stress; flexibility and steady temperament.
  • This person should be innately creative and flexible in nature. It is equally important that s/he be a "roll up your sleeves" contributor. Absolutes are a proven ability to effectively manage crisis communications, significant experience in managing high-profile communications, and the ability to make sound judgments and counsel management.
  • Required are a bachelor's degree and at least 12+ years of communications experience. Must have working knowledge of global financial markets in addition to industry knowledge of financial services, technology, information services, and media. This individual should be engaged in highly competitive market dynamics; design and implementation of strategic and tactical communications plans; budget management; the ability to direct and supervise teams, outside counsel and consultants; and the proven ability to counsel senior management. Candidates must possess strengths in understanding communications strategies that support driving cultural change towards a high-performance environment.
