The Role

Working with the Bloomberg Sports business leader and Bloomberg CMO, the marketing leader in this role will define and build a marketing planning and management process to increase top- and bottom-line performance of Bloomberg Sports, targeted at both professional and consumer audiences. This individual will work closely with the central marketing function leaders to ensure the business unit's revenue and profit objectives are adequately supported with well-informed and innovative marketing programs which effectively deliver a return on the marketing investment.

A key responsibility of the job will be to understand - and become an advocate for - the Bloomberg brand and ensure that all marketing activity undertaken on behalf of the specific Sports product area is aligned with and supports the overall brand. This critical executive will be in the Bloomberg Sports business unit and serve as part of the senior leadership marketing team at Bloomberg.

Major Responsibilities

  • Devise business-to-business marketing strategies and tactics to support commercialization of pro product following end of trial in Q4/2010
  • Grow existing online subscription-based consumer product
  • Develop and refine brand and product messaging for sports business unit
  • Help develop product line extensions within existing Bloomberg Sports products and help develop new products for additional sports
  • Build marketing planning/management capability, specifically identify skill gaps, hire new talent if required, develop existing talent and clarify roles and responsibilities
  • Partner with CMO and central marketing teams to support Sports goals, e.g., strategically sound marketing plans, customer segmentation, creative marketing programs and relevant metrics while ensuring alignment with the Bloomberg brand
  • Manage business unit marketing budget
  • Participate as a member of the marketing leadership team at Bloomberg

Skill Set Required

  • Experience in sports industry, ideally with some background in fantasy sports products and/or services
  • History with consumer-based internet sales, particularly subscription-based online products
  • Data driven, analytical
  • Strategy development and knowledge of business models
  • Value proposition and product positioning development
  • Proven ability to develop and execute innovative marketing ideas
  • Knowledge of the marketing mix and marketing program management
  • Planning, organization and project management
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills
  • Budget management skills

Ideal Experience

  • 10+ years experience in progressively responsible marketing roles and a record of superior professional accomplishment with leading, well-branded organizations. Specific experience in sports and online subscription-based services highly desirable
  • Track record of success in working in and influencing a fast-paced, fast-growing global organization
  • Experience in positioning, launching and rapidly growing new businesses, especially a web-based subscription service
  • Experience in managing end-to-end marketing from analysis and planning through execution of successful marketing programs
  • Experience in packaging, positioning, pricing and launching new products and/or services
  • Experience in product management/marketing, sales support, new product development and use of market research and analysis as well as experience establishing/maintaining CRM campaigns with segmentation and reporting
  • Must have strong technical aptitude characterized by the ability to understand technical concepts, value proposition and benefits and translate them to a variety of audiences
  • Experience in using social media to market consumer products
  • Experience in using mobile platforms for marketing initiatives
  • Experience in creating and implementing co-marketing partnerships or promotions with third parties
  • Proven ability to build a marketing capability from scratch and to evangelize and teach marketing principles and practices to relevant stakeholders
  • Bachelor's degree is required; MBA or related advanced sports marketing degree would be preferred
