The Role

Bloomberg is seeking journalists in its Washington, D.C. office with experience translating legislation into plain English and explaining the implications of proposed government action. These journalists will write short- and long-form analysis of bills and amendments, with an eye toward each measure's impact on business and the economy. They also will help produce real-time news items about action on the House and Senate floors or in committee. The successful applicant should have spent significant time on Capitol Hill, bringing to the job an understanding of committee and floor procedure. Applicants should be familiar with bills, reports and government documents. They should understand the players, policies and politics, and should thrive in a fast-paced environment that requires them to juggle interpretation and reporting tasks in different chambers and committees. They must write clearly and concisely, get details right on the first try and uphold Bloomberg's standards for speed and accuracy. Applicants should be available to work flexible hours, following the rhythms of Congress. These will be one-year contracts with a possibility of being extended or made permanent.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent;
  • At least two years of congressional news experience;
  • The ability to write quickly, concisely and accurately under deadline pressure;
  • The ability to develop and maintain sources;
  • Excellent time-management skills;
  • An entrepreneurial and energetic approach to the job;
  • A good communicator, collaborator and team player;
  • Demonstrable attention to detail and organizational skills.
