The Role:

Manages the entire development organization who is designing and developing low-latency, high frequency electronic trading systems for all electronically-traded asset classes in a development environment that consists primarily of Java and C++ on Linux and Solaris. This is accomplished by coordinating all Development Tech Leads and by providing guidance on technical realization.

  • Set and maintain a long-term strategic vision for the technical architecture and direction at Bloomberg to sustain its position as an industry leader.

  • Align strategic vision with business requirements and communicate it across all departments.
  • Assure that the technical architecture and priorities remain aligned with business priorities, and are adjusted as necessary.
  • Maintain close working relationships with senior managers from all departments to assure optimal communication and conflict resolution.
  • Set a culture of positivity, proactiveness, and a strong work ethic for the entire department by example.
  • Encourage continuous innovation, creativity, teamwork, communication and investigation of new tools and technologies.
  • Delegate authority to direct reports and empower them with decision making responsibility.
  • Insist on full accountability from subordinates to meet estimates for their teams' deliverables with a high standard of quality.
  • Ensure the utilization of object-oriented design principles, formal design patterns, unit-testing, design and code reviews, Agile Development methodology, and other software development best practices.
  • Promote rotation of responsibility across the development organization (and across offices) to foster cross-training and mitigate single-developer risk.
  • Continuously work on process improvements in the development organization, which includes quality insurance and delivery management.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the business side of electronic trading, including trading strategies, financial markets and instruments, and industry trends.
  • Provide technical and interpersonal leadership to all members of the development organization.
  • Facilitate career opportunities and training that match the aspirations of direct reports and the needs of the company.
  • Share responsibility for personal career development and training with direct supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 5-10 years minimum of C++ experience in a Unix/Linux environment
  • 5 years of experience leading teams upwards of 10 individuals in a large development organization
  • A solid understanding of financial markets and electronic trading platforms
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated, strong teamwork skills
  • Customer oriented, service-minded and well-organized
  • Available for domestic and foreign travel
