Bloomberg's UX, Product and Technology teams are committed to creating valuable and meaningful user experiences for our customers. We transform complex data and work processes into products that are indispensable to our users.

Bloomberg's User Experience Team is expanding and looking for a self-motivated Interaction Designer for our New York office. Our Interaction Designers are multi-skilled innovators with extremely strong interaction design skills, user research and usability testing expertise, and an eye for aesthetics. We are looking for a multi-disciplinary team player who can quickly learn our organization's needs and culture and take responsibility for critical design decisions regarding complex interactive applications.

Interaction Designers at Bloomberg form a core team that is responsible for the highest impact business and platform products. In addition, this team provides design stewardship and governance through a customized UI toolkit that specifies interactions at a very granular level. Interaction Designers create and maintain standards for this toolkit as well as recommended design patterns for our 3,000+ technologists to follow. Through collaboration with the technology and product teams, designers are able to test solutions in real-time and instantaneously deliver software to customers.

This position is for a thoughtful designer with a passion for making complex data and workflow problems simpler. This individual thrives in a highly collaborative and cross-disciplinary team environment. We offer the unique opportunity to help shape the most ubiquitous and influential software product in the financial space. The candidate should demonstrate creativity and a good design sense. They should embrace User-Centered Design (UCD) principles and be familiar with common UCD practices. We are looking for analytical thinkers with an aptitude for solving complex design problems. The ideal candidate should be an excellent design communicator.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in HCI, Interaction Design, Information Architecture, Visual Communication, or any design-related field.
  • Professional experience, including internships, in designing and prototyping for desktop and web-based applications.
  • Experience in designing platform-level tools would be a major plus.
  • In-depth understanding of User-Centered Design principles and tools.
  • Demonstrated fluency with wire framing and/or low-fi prototyping tool (e.g. Visio, OmniGraffle, etc.) and design tools (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
  • Experience in several of the following: designing complex user workflows, decision-support systems, large dataset visualizations and framework-level interactions, information architecture, graphic/visual design, usability research/analysis.
  • Knowledge of the software development lifecycle and its varying methodologies.
  • Experience in project management a plus.
  • Experience on institutional finance projects involving transactional interfaces is a huge plus.

Portfolio:

We are interested in reviewing a couple of your design projects for this position. We ideally would like to see artifacts from across the project lifecycle. Your representative projects may include, but should not be limited to: research, personas, sketches, site maps, task flows, wireframes, storyboards, etc. We are, however, most interested in seeing detailed wireframes (preferably a deck) illustrating a step-by-step user workflow for complex transactional interfaces. An ideal project to showcase for us would have an intricate user interface that you can use to explain your detailed design decisions. Please include two (2) projects where you can give us a "deep-dive" into your design process.
