The Bloomberg Terminal hosts thousands of applications. While varied in their functionality, all these applications need to be highly performant and consistent in their user experience. R+ is one of the two frameworks used within Bloomberg used to build the most feature-rich Bloomberg applications. The R+ Kernel team sits at the core of the R+ runtime that powers R+ applications running both on client PCs and our data centers.

The R+ kernel packages all the functionality needed to build applications. A lot of our core functionality is available as C++ libraries. Our application toolkit itself is in JavaScript. The R+ Kernel packages all the native functionality and exposes it in JavaScript. It also does complex process and application management, making it possible to run several R+ applications efficiently.

The R+ runtime is built on top of Chromium and the v8 JavaScript engine. We are also upgrading it to use standard technologies like Node.js and electron. Doing so not only aligns us with the industry, it also opens up the possibility of making Bloomberg, traditionally a Windows-only application, cross-platform.

What’s in it for you?

We, in the Application Frameworks group, are dedicated to evolving the Bloomberg Terminal to keep it reliable, secure, performant and feature-rich.
As a part of R+ Kernel you will get to:

  • Play an active role in defining the future of the Bloomberg Terminal.
  • Keep our software closely aligned with the industry.
  • Work with C++, JavaScript, Node.js and Electron communities to effect industry-wide changes.
  • Deep dive into the inner workings of Node.js and the v8 JavaScript engine

You will need to have:

  • 3+ years experience working with C++ or similar object oriented language (i.e. Java/C#)
  • Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript is a big plus.
  • A good knowledge of SDLC best practices.
  • A passion to keep the runtime performant, flexible and adherent to latest technologies.
  • A desire to collaborate and participate in enhancing team processes and practices.

We’d love to see:

  • Enthusiasm to work with the C++ and JavaScript communities within Bloomberg as well cross-industry
  • A desire to keep up to date with latest technological trends

We highly value our inclusive and diverse culture, in which everyone has the room to make an enormous impact. Our engineers write efficient, high-quality code in a rapidly evolving market landscape, collaborating to improve both our customized feeds and our handling of financial data globally.
