California Editor, San Francisco

The energy of a newsroom. The pace of a trading floor. At Bloomberg, we connect decision makers to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas. At the core of this network is our ability to deliver data, news and analytics through innovative technology – quickly and accurately. Around the clock, around the globe – we empower business leaders with breaking news, expert opinion and proprietary data distributed across platforms.

The Role:
Bloomberg News is looking for a California Editor to help us expand our coverage of the state, reporting to the California Bureau Chief. The California Editor will be responsible for all facets of the Bloomberg National Desk's California report, with an emphasis on scoops and enterprise stories that help explain this sprawling state to our Terminal customers and Web readers. This editor also will play a major role in producing a new newsletter designed to showcase Bloomberg's California coverage.

The nation’s most populous state is at the center of many of the most important stories in the US for Bloomberg News, whether that be California's power to shape global markets through legislative or regulatory action; climate policy innovation; politics and demographics, or the role some of the world's most important technology, entertainment and finance companies play in the economy. We are looking for an editor who can drive coverage of the policies, politics and personalities that Bloomberg customers need to know and understand as they assess how California will affect their futures, regardless of where they live, work or do business.

This position will allow the successful candidate to take on a leadership role as Bloomberg reimagines and expands its National coverage, while working in close coordination with the California Bureau Chief. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to drive coverage, motivate reporters and editors to deliver stories with impact and stay cool in a breaking news environment.

We'll trust you to:

  •  Know that speed is essential in a competitive wire-service atmosphere
  •  Have a desire to land scoops and exclusives to lead the competition
  •  Know how to work closely with reporters and editors and collaborate with other teams, inside California and out, to achieve the best work
  •  Be versatile and nimble in changing course quickly as needed to cover all facets of the California story
  •  Thrive in a collaborative, dynamic newsroom where news can break at any time
  •  Be a good colleague and a natural excitement about stories also are essential.
  •
    You'll need to have:
  •  Have at least 4 years of experience in daily journalism, preferably in an editing role
  •  Exceptional news judgment and line-editing skills
  •  An eagerness to understand California’s policy landscape, in particular business, tax and financial regulation, along with water, energy, sustainability and the state’s bold climate goals.
  •  A drive to stay ahead of the competition and flexibility in how to approach the news, meaning at times serving different platforms with different story forms.
  •  The capacity to work quickly and collaboratively under intense deadline pressure as well as on longer-range deadlines
  •
