Space Editor
Seattle, WA
Posted Mar 30, 2023 - Requisition No. 115206
THE ROLE:
Bloomberg News is looking for an editor to supervise our coverage of one of the most exciting beats in business news, the commercialization of space. The editor will assume responsibility for a small team of writers tasked with covering investment, science and technology, NASA and exploration, companies and commerce, and politics and governance. Led by the private sector for the first time in history, the space race has multiplied into dozens of contests waged by multiple earthbound industries, including communications, mining, pharmaceuticals, and defense, to name a few. This editor will not only help coordinate breaking news coverage from interdisciplinary reporters across the globe; she or he will also develop scoops of ideas for enterprise stories, audio and video series and a weekly newsletter.
Apart from exhibiting expert diplomacy, the ideal candidate would also be a player coach - someone interested in authoring stories that best anticipate and explain off-world commerce, its challenges and consequences, intended or otherwise. That could include everything from the space economy to advanced space applications like satellite servicing and resource mining; from crewed spaceflight to advanced exploratory probes; from celestial internet to earth observation applications; from terrestrial spaceports to deep-space colonies. The best candidate, while recognizing the benefits and massive potential of space pioneering, would also have a nose to detect the vast difference between ambition and achievement to ensure our readership isn’t misled by fast-paced announcements coming from new corporate and government entrants and old.
WE'LL TRUST YOU TO:
- Exercise superb and competitive news judgment in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborate across the global newsroom to deliver news scoops and enterprise.
- Exhibit creativity in storytelling across all media types, including data visualization.
- Develop a sensibility for the terminal and web readerships, knowing when and how to appeal to different audiences and, ideally, both at the same time.
YOU'LL NEED TO HAVE:
- The drive to excel in a competitive field, pushing for breaking news as well as enterprise.
- Previous experience managing teams.
- Impeccable news judgment.
- A deft editing hand to help the teams produce engaging, clear and jargon-free stories that can resonate across platforms.
- Strong data skills with the ability to understand finance.
- A proven ability to collaborate across a far-flung news organization
