Bloomberg News is seeking an experienced software engineer who’s excited about merging the worlds of journalism, technology and creativity to tell powerful and impactful stories.

As a member of the newly formed Data & Investigations Content Engineers team, you’ll be instrumental in shaping the future of Data Journalism at Bloomberg News. You’ll work shoulder to shoulder with our growing Data Journalism team to help the newsroom unlock stories for a sophisticated global audience. You’ll leverage the expertise of Engineering teams building analyst & data environments to solve shared goals and visions.

Impact will be measured in a variety of ways, from a byline on an impactful investigative story to an innovative tool that pioneers new forms of data reporting. Your ideas and contributions will be highly valued, and your work will be directly seen by millions of Bloomberg News readers.

In the role of Data & Investigations Content Engineers, your creativity and problem-solving will be a driving force. You'll have the autonomy to work with evolving technologies, like large language models and natural language processing, ensuring our newsroom remains at the forefront of a rapidly changing media landscape. You’ll have access to powerful internal tools and platforms that have made Bloomberg L.P. a global leader in business and financial data.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on a variety of projects that merge journalism, data and technology, ensuring unique experiences in every task
  • Contribute code that solves problems and enables innovative reporting techniques.
  • Help reporters acquire and work with sensitive data like large document leaks in a safe and timely manner.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment, using your technical expertise to influence how stories are told and consumed.
  • Expose reporters to tools, frameworks and processes that could help break news.
  • Work closely with data journalists and other engineering teams to expand the boundaries of traditional reporting, from one-off stories to long-term workflow improvements.
  • Continuously learn and experiment with emerging tools and technologies.
  • Play a vital role in making data more accessible and transparent to a global audience through databases and innovative tools.

You will need to have:

  • 4+ years experience in software development
  • A passion for news, with a drive to experiment and innovate in the rapidly evolving area of Data Journalism.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and a desire to tackle unique challenges.
  • Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, HTML/XML or R
  • Experience with APIs, back-end services, databases management and SQL.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication abilities.
  • A familiarity in data analysis, web scraping or natural language processing.
  • Strong instincts for uncovering hidden story angles within data.
  • Eagerness to explore new tools and problem-solving techniques like LLMs and AI.

We would love to see:

  • Experience in Apache Arrow, Google Big Query, Parquet files for navigating large data
  • Interest in team leadership: we are actively growing in size and responsibility so opportunities for leadership are on the horizon

Salary Range: 160,000 - 240,000 USD Annually + Benefits + Bonus

The referenced salary range is based on the Company's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
