We are seeking a talented, highly-motivated intern with expertise in behavioral economics or consumer psychology to join our analysis team. You'll be working on a groundbreaking project to further understand consumer decisions in relation to a range of new energy propositions – from technologies such as rooftop solar, electric vehicles and smart home devices as well as new utility service offerings. You’re someone with a real passion for understanding the connection between human behavior and broader societal and technological trends, and possess the ability to collaborate with our team of clean energy specialists to generate new insights into the future of energy. You love taking on complex questions, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and are excited at the prospect of working alongside colleagues with a diverse range of skills and backgrounds.

Our team:

You will be based in our New York office, working as part of our Energy Smart Technologies research team at BNEF – the world's leading independent provider of analysis, tools, data and research to decision makers leading change in the energy system. With the unique depth and breadth of our comprehensive BNEF platform, we help clients stay on top of developments across the energy spectrum.

What's the role?

  • You will join the Energy Smart Technologies analyst team, working closely with various analysts across the energy and transportation space.
  • You will lead a project to assess how behavioral considerations can shape the future of the energy industry through the uptake of rooftop solar, electric vehicles and other new energy propositions.
  • Together with other team members, you will identify topics of interest to clients, conduct research, and publish written reports on the findings.

We will trust you to:

  • Bring your behavioral economics and consumer psychology perspective to our clients.
  • Work together to develop a new vision for the future relationship between utilities and their customers.
  • Write and publish reports in English about consumer trends in clean energy, covering major developments, and market player strategies.
  • Build new metrics for tracking the evolution of consumer-facing energy products and services.
  • Propose innovative ways to estimate future consumer adoption of energy technologies and services.
  • Engage with clients and industry figures daily via email, phone and in person.

We'll need you to:

  • Communicate clearly in English: Writing (for research reports) and speaking (for presentations, clients and/or media)
  • Act as a self-starter, have a high work-rate and have the ability to work on parallel tasks with attention to detail.
  • Think critically and cut through the noise of data, extract and analyze key patterns, and to apply skepticism to the claims of industry participants and ask insightful questions.
  • Form creative opinions, graphically present data and write clearly and concisely.

We would love you to have:

  • Interest in and enthusiasm for clean and disruptive energy technologies, especially relating to consumer-focused applications.
  • A degree in economics, psychology or a related field with a specific focus or modules on behavioral economics or consumer psychology.

At a minimum, we require that you:

  • Are legally authorize to work full-time in the United States and will not require visa sponsorship in the future
  • Can work full-time from August 2017 – November 2017
  • Will receive your Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university May 2017 and/or Master's degree
