Beijing

Posted Jul 24, 2019 - Requisition No. 76281

The world's number 2 economy is one of the most fascinating, challenging stories there is to tell in journalism. From the white-heat of the U.S.-China trade war to the slow demographic shifts that impact more than a billion people, China's economy is relevant for global readers like never before. The task is to cover it comprehensively, accurately, and quickly.

Working as part of a team in our Beijing bureau, the successful candidate will keep readers abreast of both day-to-day detail of economic data and be able to unearth the big underlying trends, before our competitors do. This will involve liaising with government ministries for the official view, utilizing the power of the information on the Bloomberg terminal, as well as digging into a wide range of alternative data for another perspective.

To tell the full story, travel around the country to report out stories is an essential part of the job, as is working with colleagues globally to cover China's emerging role as an economic policy heavyweight. The ideal China economy reporter is as comfortable interviewing high-level officials in the corridors of the International Monetary Fund as visiting factory floors or chatting with shopkeepers in far-flung provinces.

We're looking for a candidate who has:

  • A bachelor's or equivalent degree
  • A deep interest in macroeconomics, and has some experience of covering economic indicators, monetary policy and/or trade developments
  • Ability to write clearly, quickly and accurately in English, often under intense time pressure
  • Experience with story-telling across a range of platforms, including print, digital, podcasts & graphics
  • Knowledge of Mandarin, with fluency being an advantage
