Bloomberg is looking for a dynamic, well-connected and self-starting reporter to cover government and economic news in Hungary. Working as part of a network of reporters across the European Union, you’ll be breaking news and developing feature ideas at the heart of one of bloc’s most persistent trouble spots.

You’ll be writing about Viktor Orban’s efforts to stabilize Hungary’s finances, to keep EU money flowing and maintain his ties to the Kremlin with war raging on his doorstep. You’ll also be able to pull back the curtain on Orban’s illiberal government and explain how that fits into the broader European story.

You'll have a solid understanding of economics and markets as well as the political history of Hungary and will be able to draw links across geopolitics and markets.

The position will be based in Budapest and involve international travel.

We'll trust you to:

  • Develop a network of high-level sources across both the government and the central bank
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across the newsroom to deliver maximum impact for our readers
  • Buy in to our ambitions to be first with the news that our clients care about
  •
    You'll also need to have:
  • Full fluency in Hungarian and English
  • At least three years’ experience in journalism and a proven track record of building sources and delivering scoops.
  • An understanding of Hungary’s institutions and how to navigate them
  • Ideas on how to compliment your storytelling with video, audio and graphics would be a major bonus
  •
