A continent of around a billion people, stretching from South Africa to the Sahara, with the largest proportion of young people on the planet. Africa's potential is a commodities story, a corporate story, an economic story, and an enormous political story.

We are seeking a talented journalist or editor to lead Bloomberg's Africa government team at a time of significant change in the region: New leaders, coming elections and geopolitical shifts, from the role of Islamic militancy to great power rivalries playing out across the continent. Challenges to governments including income inequality, climate change and reliability of basic services.

We cover a vast swathe of geography. We'd expect our team leader to drive a culture of breaking news across that territory and foster a sense of common mission. You will spot emerging trends, be quick to join the dots and push ambition on enterprise stories that explain Africa to our global readers.

The ideal candidate will thrive under deadline pressure and have experience handling a heavy news calendar and irregular hours. Of critical importance is the ability to connect with editors and reporters across the newsroom, both in Africa and around the world, and develop stories that marry politics with companies and markets. The team leader will also work closely with bureaus and regional managers.

You will promote our work both internally and externally all our platforms, including through the Bloomberg Politics website, social media and our Balance of Power newsletter.

You'll need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • A proven career in business journalism
  • The ability to excel in a fast-paced news environment and makes sound news decisions quickly
  • The ability to generate original story ideas and see them through
  • Excellent editing skills and experience with features and story graphics
  • Knowledge of African politics would be an advantage

If that sounds like you:

Apply if you think we're a good match! We'll get in touch with you to let you know the next steps.
