Teams that you can apply to:

News Automation Infrastructure
Our latest generation of news automation showcases the awesome potential of our real-time market data to react instantly to market events. We generate automated stories that break the news, and move markets in ways which humans will never be able to!

The automation infrastructure you create will generate real-time stories on the Bloomberg production news wires accessible to all of our clients. You will work with smart people just like yourself - journalists and stakeholders who excel in the business of financial market news and technologists who are at the top of their game. You’ll be charged with using the most up-to date technologies to build an end-to-end platform for generating automated news content. From input triggers, through the text generation engine and on to news, you’ll play a part in the development of the whole system.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working with our newsroom colleagues, and engineering partners to build a system that can cope with our increased load and performance demands
  • Working on the new concept of Bloomberg Automated Insights On demand, a client-facing platform, which allows clients to generate automated insight notes at the click of a button
  • You’ll be joining a team that prides itself on the quality of the product, has a culture of automated testing, and who are looking to innovate in everything it does
  • We also have many more exciting challenges coming up as the scope of the news automation team grows

We'd love to see:

  • An interest in automation, and news in general
  • Familiarity with the nuances of building high volume, high availability distributed systems
  • Experience with micro-services
  • C++ experience
  • Experience in news
  • Interest or experience in financial markets

News Editing and Workflow

The News Editing & Workflow team is a crucial part of the News product. Not only do we build the tools that the newsroom use, but we are also increasingly responsible for the group’s infrastructure. Our terminal functions are being used 24/7 in hundreds of news bureaus across the globe – making it imperative to get their quality right!

This year we are embarking on projects to unify Bloomberg’s segregated news platforms. Our team will therefore handle more users, new paradigms and develop tools to accommodate for this. We are starting with the editing experience, giving reporters the ability to work offline while the Bloomberg professional service is unreachable, and seamlessly integrate with the terminal once connection is restored. We expect a lot of greenfield software development as part of this project.

Many of Bloomberg’s reporters are based in the same office as we are – this allows us to see our software in action, and how it makes a difference to our colleagues on a daily basis.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Design and implement the next generation Content Authoring System
  • Analyse newsroom workflows and design tools to support these
  • Continuously improve our software suite
  • Take ownership and responsibility of the product

We'd love to see:

  • C++ experience
  • Basic understanding of SQL
  • You feel comfortable using messaging applications such as RabbitMQ
  • You know about XML transformations using XSLT
  • You have used a template language writing tool like Pug (formerly known as Jade)
