The mission of the Commodities Navigation and Analytics team is to provide tools to help analysts gain insights from commodities data. The amount of data available to market participants has exploded in recent years, from power station outages to oil tanker routes to rainfall in crop-producing regions. Commodities clients and Bloomberg's own internal analysts rely on this data for research and ultimately to drive trading decisions, and we must equip them with powerful and flexible analytics tools to explore these new datasets.

To address this need, we develop several products integrated within the Bloomberg Terminal, such as a Seasonality Analysis tool, a Flow Visualisation product to help understand how physical goods move across regions, and community platforms to gather and show forecasts from different groups of subject-matter experts.

Another core area for the team is building tools to support internal analysts and data scientists. The CNA team is working closely with other commodities teams to provide a platform where analysts can quickly and easily ingest, access, and share large datasets with their teams. By using open-source technologies and Bloomberg infrastructure, we empower them to perform interactive SQL queries for QA and experimental analysis, run analytical models, derive insights, and publish the derived content to consumer stores. This enables analysts to focus entirely on producing high quality content and to push it in front of our users with a shorter lead time.

Most of our software is written in Python 3 on the backend side, and Javascript for UIs. We rely heavily on some well-known open-source projects (Kafka, Iceberg, Spark, Pandas, Trino, Superset) while still integrating with Bloomberg core infrastructure. We put a strong emphasis on software quality, consistency, and reliability, and make extensive use of Docker for local development and testing in isolation.

What’s in it for you:

  • Solving complex problems and building new products by using pioneering technologies in the fields of data engineering, visualisation, and analytics
  • Collaborating with analysts, data scientists, commodities experts and having an impact on markets by helping our users understand the dynamics which drive today’s economy
  • Joining a group which values developer experience and software quality
  • Learning more about finance and commodities

We will trust you to:

  • Take ownership of the full software creation process, from understanding the needs of the business through to coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance
  • Design and implement technical solutions with an eye to the future
  • Use industry best practices for testing, automation, continuous integration and continuous deployment
  • Proactively reach out and collaborate with other teams across Bloomberg to remove blockers and help better address our users’ needs.

You will need to have:

  • Good experience coding in Python, C++ or Java on a production or customer-facing product coupled with a solid knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and all phases of software development.
  • Passion for building high quality software
  • Excellent autonomy, problem-solving and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to work primarily in Python
  • Curiosity and desire to learn more about our business, products, and technologies
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

We’d love to see:

  • Strong knowledge of Python
  • Experience scaling Python software to support more users or larger volumes of data
  • Experience working on Linux, and with Docker containers
  • Familiarity with Pandas, Kafka, Amazon S3 or Trino
