Our Team:

Launched by Michael R. Bloomberg in 2014, the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) is designed to provide cross disciplinary education programs to strengthen business and economic journalism, convene African and international leaders to examine worldwide best practices in financial journalism, and improve access to information in order to advance transparency and accountability on the continent.

The initiative hosts major business journalism training programs across Africa, an annual Pan-Africa conference and a Community Media Fund to enhance citizens’ access to relevant information by strengthening community media and citizen journalism that enables the public to support policies and practices that drive inclusive economic and human development locally, regionally and nationally. The CMF’s makes disbursements to grantees in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

This is an exciting time of continued growth for BMIA as it is expanding into new countries on the continent with financial journalism training, additional workshops and related programs planned for the forthcoming years.

The Role:

Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa is seeking an Executive Assistant to provide administrative and programmatic support to the Head of the Initiative. If you thrive in a fast-paced and challenging environment, working on international programs, are highly dedicated, very organized, adept at multi-tasking and juggling shifting priorities, we would love to speak to you.

In this critical role no given day will be the same. You love interacting with diverse team members, business areas, and external partners (at all executive levels). You thrive juggling tasks and demands in a rapidly changing environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, resourceful and efficient. You’re reliable and trustworthy, always ensuring sensitivity to confidential matters. You have great judgment - people rely on you to get it done - you think quickly and make sound decisions. You’re effective in communication – you know how to keep people fully informed of critical issues.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Handle all administrative tasks for the Head of BMIA; manage and maintain executive schedule, appointments and travel arrangements; arrange and coordinate meetings and events.
  • Communicate on their behalf; open and manage mail, monitor, respond to and distribute incoming communications.
  • Assist with the preparation of presentation materials
  • Assemble, analyze and prepare background materials
  • Assist in preparing materials for annual budgets, program evaluations, and other quarterly time sensitive and confidential reports
  • Review and summarize reports and documents; conduct research
  • Work independently, prioritize critical tasks - often with little direct supervision

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to Program Manager based in South Africa
  • Maintain the integrity of program statistics
  • Serve as program ambassador at events, conferences and other related activities, and support the BMIA at such events;
  • Receive and interact with incoming visitors
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

You’ll need to have:

  • Minimum of three years of applicable work experience as an Executive Assistant.
  • Superior written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office including SharePoint, PowerPoint. With the appetite to adopt and learn new technology.
  • A very sensitive eye for detail. Typos aren't your thing; perfect execution is.
  • Excellent reporting, documentation, time and budget management skills
  • An ability to keep calm and work quickly amidst a crisis.
  • High degree of professionalism, flexibility and customer-focus.
  • Speed and adaptability - especially juggling multiple tasks and deadlines – you can shift priorities quickly
  • Resourceful and proactive teammate.
  • Willingness to travel

We’d love to see:

  • Fluency in French
  • Familiarity with Tableau

  • Executive presence and confidence, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality
