What’s the role?
Bloomberg is seeking an attorney with significant experience in the areas of intellectual property law, software licensing and commercial and technology transactions to join our in-house legal department. The Counsel will serve as the global head of copyright and trademark matters, advising on issues such as fair use, registration, enforcement and litigation. The Counsel also will advise clients on a broad range of other IP-related matters that arise in the course of developing and offering financial technology products and services, including software and open source licensing, branding, domain names and data use. The Counsel will build commercial relationships with Bloomberg's clients, suppliers and strategic partners and be responsible for negotiating and drafting commercial agreements, including license and service agreements relating to software, music and technology services.
The Counsel will be a valued member of a dynamic legal department that is deeply integrated with Bloomberg's innovative global technology and financial information businesses. Practicing in the Legal Department's "open floor" office space at Bloomberg's global headquarters in New York, the Counsel will collaborate frequently with colleagues and internal clients in an exciting, high-energy work environment.
We'll trust you to:
- Serve as the global head of copyrights and trademarks, including counseling clients on fair use and content licensing and supervising registration and enforcement
- Draft and negotiate commercial agreements relating to intellectual property, software and technology services
- Provide legal support and counsel for engineering, sales and media on issues of software licensing, IP ownership, branding, and publishing
You’ll need to have:
- At least 15 years of experience practicing law
- Subject matter expertise in the areas of copyright and trademark law
- Substantial experience drafting and negotiating software licenses, content licenses and service agreements in the technology space
- Experience practicing in-house preferred
- Patent experience viewed favorably
- Membership in the New York bar
