Bloomberg's Comdb2 DBA Engineering team administers Bloomberg's in-house-developed RDBMS (known as Comdb2) which is available to the public via an open-source release.

This RDBMS is derived from Berkeley DB with a SQLite based query interface and support for numerous facilities including: transactions, locking, concurrency, clustering and replication along with a client library (API) able to transparently negotiate reconnection and connections to lowest-cost (and coherent) nodes (in a cluster configuration).

Specifically, our team is responsible for tasks such as development of best practices and repeatable procedures for deploying and managing databases, as well as day-to-day operational activities including break/fix, resource balancing, backup and recovery, database tuning, database replication management and coordination of schema changes. We also work closely with the RDBMS developers and retain and foster deep understanding of this RDBMS's internals in order to respond quickly and effectively to matters ranging from design input to urgent trouble shooting. We're also tasked with building and maintaining tools for the management of the environment.

If these responsibilities sound exciting to you and you're a self-motivated and highly curious Database Administrator / Engineer with experience in SQL, IT administration, Unix, performance tuning, Database Internals, and Perl/shell programming (scripting), we'd love to talk to you about joining our DBA team!

You'll need to have:

  • Experience working with at least one of the commercially available relational database technologies for a minimum of 4 years
  • Knowledge of SQL and SQL performance tuning
  • Solid understanding of relational database internal architecture
  • Experience in performance tuning of databases
  • Experience with Unix and Unix tools including shell & Perl scripting
  • Experience in designing and automating repeatable processes
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills

We'd love to see:

  • Experience analyzing existing RDBMS/IT/Operational systems and identifying shortcomings with concrete ideas for improvement.
  • Knowledge of Berkeley DB
  • Knowledge of C programming

You'll be expected to work:

  • Mon-Fri, Day Shift (9am - 5pm)
  • Weekly on call rotation approximately once every 2 months.

If this sounds like you, apply!
