Senior Software Engineer - Application Runtime - R+
New York, NY
Posted Sep 16, 2022 - Requisition No. 106224
The Bloomberg Terminal hosts thousands of applications. While varied in their functionality, all these applications need to be highly performant and consistent in their user experience. R+ is one of the two frameworks used within Bloomberg used to build the most feature-rich Bloomberg applications. The R+ Kernel team sits at the core of the R+ runtime that powers R+ applications running both on client PCs and our data centers.
The R+ kernel packages all the functionality needed to build applications. A lot of our core functionality is available as C++ libraries. Our application toolkit itself is in JavaScript. The R+ Kernel packages all the native functionality and exposes it in JavaScript. It also does complex process and application management, making it possible to run several R+ applications efficiently.
The R+ runtime is built on top of Chromium and the v8 JavaScript engine. We are also upgrading it to use standard technologies like Node.js and electron. Doing so not only aligns us with the industry, it also opens up the possibility of making Bloomberg, traditionally a Windows-only application, cross-platform.
What’s in it for you?
We, in the Application Frameworks group, are dedicated to evolving the Bloomberg Terminal to keep it reliable, secure, performant and feature-rich.
As a part of R+ Kernel you will get to:

- Work with C++, JavaScript, Node.js and Electron communities to effect industry-wide changes.

- Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript is a big plus.
- A good knowledge of SDLC best practices.
- A passion to keep the runtime performant, flexible and adherent to latest technologies.
