Data Services team is responsible for core data and analytics services which provides a single point of entry for Bloomberg Terminal and Enterprise applications to retrieve any kind of data available in Bloomberg. This includes multiple foundational services such as Calcrt and Histrt infrastructure,Id Master, Metadata and anomaly detection system. These systems serve 260+ billion requests a day running on 1000+ machines.

With ever increasing data volumes and growth of Bloomberg’s Enterprise products, this footprint has been growing at a rapid pace (increasing 25% YOY). This poses some unique large scale distributed systems challenges related to the scale, latency, availability and reliability. The system should be designed to handle billions of requests from thousands of applications.

To accommodate our future needs we are architecting major parts of our system and moving it to a modern technology stack. This includes building many new systems like Calcrt Federation, Security Resolution, Calcrt Gateway, Id Master and semantically linked Metadata. We would be working on building infrastructure to manage a large farm of machines to run these systems. We envision to re-architect Calcrt to follow an API Gateway pattern(like Netflix Zuul, Kong) with hundreds of microservices integrating into it and providing data for their bounded context.  It would provide key functionalities such as routing request to appropriate services, authentication, monitoring, load balancing, caching, request shaping and management on top of it.  The project would also include enhancing our Anomaly detection platform to maintain quality and performance SLAs of microservices.

Our infrastructure forms the backbone of the Bloomberg application stack and Enterprise business. We have to design the system to be resilient to failures or latency spikes in downstream services and to isolate such failure while still being able to serve the rest of the requests. It has to be resilient to misuse by the client applications while providing deterministic SLAs.

We are looking for strong C++/Java software engineers who can design and develop low latency, high performance distributed systems. If you are interested in practicing design skills and programming skills that could create a huge impact for the entire company, this is the place for you. If you like to have fun as well while doing this, you will fit right in.

We’ll trust you to:

  • Design, implement and own critical applications and components of our infrastructure stack
  • Apply your experience to drive and own the architecture of the system
  • Enhance our infrastructure to fulfill mission critical SLAs, whether low latency or high throughput data retrieval
  • Interact with various teams across Bloomberg to evangelize your work and help people in adopting your system

You need to have:

  • 3+ years of software development in C++ or Java on UNIX/Linux environment
  • Solid understanding of algorithms and data structures, knowledge of object-oriented design and multi-threading
  • Proficiency in Bloomberg Stack - BAS, Comdb2, GUTS, etc
  • Experience with high volume, highly available distributed systems
  • BA, BS, MS, PhD in Computer Science, Engineering or related technology field

We’d love to see:

  • Experience in Modern C++ design and/or Reactive programming techniques
  • Experience with implementing production grade systems using Java
  • Experience with open source technologies like Hadoop, HBase, Kafka, Spark etc
