Who are we?

Bloomberg is the global leader in business and financial data, news, and insights. Using the power of technology, we connect the world’s decision-makers to accurate information on the financial markets and help them make faster, smarter decisions.

What is the challenge?

Traditionally, investors look to fundamental data to assess a company’s health and future earnings. Analysts pore over regulatory filings, guidance by company management, and sell side estimates. Alternative data, in contrast, consists of credit card transactions, foot traffic, mobile app or web activity, car registrations, etc. Whether it is investors or companies themselves, these non-traditional data streams can provide much more timely insights into a company’s performance. For example, a potential investor may use anonymized transaction data to analyze real-time effects of a major product launch on the company’s bottom line. A company itself may use such data to understand its services’ appeal across demographic cohorts, either for itself or competitors.

The Alt Data team within Bloomberg is charged with democratizing access to alternative data analysis. Traditionally the domain of only those in the know, we believe we can make key insights approachable to the majority of analysts who are otherwise drowning in raw data, as well as delivering relevant feeds to the more sophisticated, quantitatively inclined users.

What will you do?

As a UX Researcher, you will help the Alt Data product teams focus on the end user. You will be responsible for leading qualitative and quantitative user research initiatives that guide the evolution of Bloomberg’s Alt Data offerings. You will evangelize the integration of research methods into the product development process.

Researchers work closely with product managers, designers, prototypers, engineers, and sales throughout the development process.
You will play a pivotal role in all aspects of the product design process:

  • During the conception of a product idea, you will plan and conduct interviews, contextual inquiries, and field studies with users and subject-matter experts to develop an understanding of users' needs and workflows.
  • You will evaluate early stage concepts through empirical and analytical methods as appropriate, iterating with your partner UX designer and product team to shape the product
  • In later stages, you will plan and conduct usability analyses either remotely, on user sites, or in our state-of-the-art usability labs in NYC and London.
  • During development, you will work with our data scientists and engineers to establish an instrumentation plan to measure whether the product meets its business goals while maintaining the privacy of our clients.
  • With deployed products, you will plan and conduct analyses to illuminate where the product is serving clients' needs across regions and roles and how the team should evolve its intended value and implementation.

Our ideal candidate is driven by the desire to be a user advocate and is passionate about gathering insights based on direct observation and evidence-based best practices in the field to create products that are useful, usable, and satisfying. As a life-long learner, they continuously increase their research skills and industry knowledge, via internal training and education, industry conferences, and the UX researcher community within Bloomberg.

Who will you work with

Your immediate partner will be an experienced UX designer focused, like you, on the Alt Data offerings. You will sit within a UX team based in San Francisco that consists of experienced leaders in HCI and UX. You will additionally participate in a UX Research Community of Practice that has seasoned veterans well-versed in methodology and practice.

For Alt Data, the Product, Engineering, and SME partners are located in San Francisco, New York, and London. UX and Product reside within our Chief Technology Officer (CTO) group, which incubates our most strategic and long-term projects. This structure ensures that UX is the driver of the product vision and has buy-in from the highest levels of Bloomberg’s leadership.

You’ll need to have

  • M.S. in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Interaction Design, Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Science, or related field is preferred; Ph.D. is desired
  • 5+ years of experience in user experience research in a product setting, preferably a digital interface. Familiarity with enterprise products research would be a plus
  • Experience in learning and working within a complex knowledge domain; financial knowledge is a plus but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute exploratory field studies, needs analysis through various methods, concept validation with low fidelity artifacts, usage analysis, and lab/remote usability evaluations
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation skills to communicate clear, concise findings and actionable recommendations
