Bloomberg Second Measure is a leading provider of data products that deliver valuable insights about company performance and consumer spending. Using data from billions of anonymized consumer transactions, we have built self-service analytics products for daily tracking and real-time exploration of 5,200+ public and private companies. Clients use our product to discover new markets, gain an advantage in financial investments, and inform their strategies.

As the team lead on our Applications team, you will be involved in all aspects of BSM’s software development lifecycle. We will count on you to lead a team of software engineers and data scientists who build and maintain BSM products for hedge fund analysts, our core user persona. In collaboration with product managers, your team will help discover and validate new products and features to bring value to this persona.

 

We'll trust you to:

• Shape the culture of your team of 8 engineers and data scientists by setting expectations, standards, and processes
• Accept people management responsibilities for your team and support their professional growth and development
• Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering Leadership to translate strategic priorities into operational plans by defining quarterly goals for the team
• Partner with Engineering Leadership to identify skill gaps on your team and address them with training or hiring
• Take accountability for the quality and output of the technical solutions your team develops to meet product and business needs
• Advocate for your team by navigating the organization to proactively unblock them. Partner with other teams and work with senior leaders to deliver on your roadmap.
• Maintain your technical skill and build empathy with your team by taking on some development tasks that are off of the critical path

 

You'll need to have:

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Dedication to actively promote a diverse and inclusive team environment
• Experience interviewing candidates and providing input on hiring decisions
• Appetite to develop a deep domain understanding of BSM’s products and data
• Experience operating critical, client-facing software or systems
• Experience with descriptive statistics and/or business analytics
• Comfort with ambiguity

 

We'd love to see:

• Experience building alternative data products or software for institutional investors
• Experience partnering with peers and leaders in other functions
• Track record of hiring experienced candidates in software engineering or data science roles
• Experience leading a distributed and remote team
• Familiarity with developing and operating event-driven systems in a distributed environment
