It's consistently one of the biggest stories in business. It moves equities markets on a regular basis. It determines the course of your healthcare as well as the newest gadgets and innovations.

It's the world of patents, and Bloomberg is seeking a reporter to tell that story.

There's no shortage of hot topics these days, as pharmaceutical and tech titans like Pfizer, Allergan, Amazon, Apple and Qualcomm battle over intellectual property in court. And now more than ever, the Delaware courts are the place to be.

You're able to quickly interpret legal documents and turn filings into easy-to-understand prose, then quickly write a narrative that explains why a case or ruling is important for the companies and/or industry. You're able to learn new concepts easily and have the ability to develop sources and make contacts. You're eager to help when needed and embrace an all-hands-on-deck approach. You're creative and enjoy pitching story ideas. You're the perfect person to join our patents coverage in Wilmington, Delaware.

We'll trust you to:

  • Check Delaware court dockets for new cases and track ongoing litigation, and quickly write up breaking news in clear, concise language for lay readers and investors -- hedge funds will be your biggest competitors
  • Pitch stories on topics of interest in the field of patent litigation to give readers a richer understanding of the inner workings of the law
  • Watch out for trends and pitch ideas to turn dry patentese into dynamic stories that explain how the lawsuits reflect changes in specific industries or society at large
  • Chart and visually display data to help your stories stand out
  • Cover trials that feature complex information on cutting edge technology or science
  • Develop sources among local patent lawyers and the courts
  • Take risks and find ways to innovate while maintaining the highest standards for accuracy and speed
  • Contribute across a variety of Bloomberg platforms and formats, such as television, radio, Businessweek and QuickTake explainers
  • Work under tight deadlines and collaborate with reporters and editors inside and outside the Wilmington bureau on breaking news and influencing decision makers

You'll need to have:

  • An aptitude with words and numbers
  • The ability to turn complex data into a narrative accessible to market professionals and casual readers
  • Knowledge of patent law, the Delaware courts, digital platforms and an ability to develop graphics (a plus!)
  • 3+ years of business journalism experience
